WATER AND OIL DON’T MIX: AFTER
“Water and Oil Don’t Mix” is both the title and the guiding principle of this body of work. Mirela Fioresy takes a fundamental lesson from painting; that oil and acrylic will never blend; and transforms it into a method for discovery. By layering these materials on a single surface, she allows their resistance to guide the outcome, watching pigments push, repel, and settle into unexpected organic formations. The encounter becomes both process and metaphor, revealing moments of tension, separation, and fragile coexistence.
The original series was developed during the GlogauAIR Artist Residency in Berlin. The works presented here belong to Water and Oil Don’t Mix: After, a continuation of that investigation. Created following the residency, these pieces extend the material dialogue through ongoing experimentation, allowing the process to unfold with greater openness and variation. Rather than repeating the initial works, they function as derivative explorations — testing how the same resistant materials can generate new visual behaviors, rhythms, and forms over time.
